Building a More Accessible Web

The Glaucoma Research Foundation is a national non-profit organization, dedicated to preserving the vision and independence of people with glaucoma. In addition to public education, GRF funds innovative, collaborative neuroscience research with implications for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s in addition to glaucoma.

We worked with them to create a website that is a model of accessibility, while offering useful information and attracting funding for their ongoing work.

Research First

In order to do this right, we interviewed organization staff members, eye doctors, and people with glaucoma. We also conducted an extensive literature review. Once we had a design prototype, we conducted usability tests with representative site users.

One site, many views

To make the site as accessible as possible, we separated content and presentation. Thanks to thoughtful content structure and the wonders of modern CSS, site visitors can customize their own view for type size and contrast. Screenreader-friendly, too.

Easy on the eyes

The Glaucoma Research Foundation wanted to stand apart from other research foundations. We created a unique design that is warm, not clinical, and—above all—clear and readable.

Integrated Video

Researchers speaking enthusiastically about their work brings life to otherwise technical material. We used Flash to ensure the most seamless possible experience, with an accompanying transcript for improved accessibility.
