Work With Us
We’re small enough that everyone does a little bit of everything, but smart enough to know some people are better at some things than others. We’re always looking for people who work smart, work hard, and are passionate about design.
Send us an e-mail telling us why you want to work here. The resume is secondary. Everyone cleans their own dishes.
Information Architect/Design Strategist
Mule Design Studio is looking for an Information Architect or Design Strategist or whatever the hell you’re calling each other this week to join our team.
We specialize in interactive design projects that have the potential to make a positive difference in the lives of real people.
Our clients include non-profit organizations and businesses doing interesting things for money. We tend to prefer working for small and mid-sized organizations. We are highly skeptical of this whole "Web 2.0" thing and take the long view of design.
We also make funny t-shirts about squid.
Our ideal new Mule would have the following qualities:
- Consider design above and across multiple media and platforms.
- Have joyfully solved many thorny problems for clients, and would joyfully work with clients again.
- Think incisively, speak clearly, and diagram efficiently. Sketching is a bonus.
- Communicate with skill and confidence, whether speaking or writing.
- Give and take criticism well, and genuinely like working collaboratively. (Rockstars need not apply.)
- Fight the forces of mediocrity and lazy thinking.
This is a permanent position beginning as soon as we find the right person.

Web Designer
We are looking for a designer who understands the web and loves it and wants to make it better.
You need to know how to comp and code, sure, but most of all you need to know the rules of good design. You need to be able to stand by your work and explain your decisions.
You need a solid understanding of web standards and a desire to argue about at least 3 bone-headed ways HTML5 is wrong, while being mostly absolutely right.
We are a small shop and everyone who works here has to be at the top of their game.
The Web Designer we're looking for has
- 3+ years experience designing web sites and web applications in a client-services environment
- an overwhelming desire to create the best web sites on the Internet
- a burning need to push web design into its next evolutionary stage
- no fear of clients, or of telling clients things they might need to know but are afraid to hear
- the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines (IA, strategy, visual design, code) and ideas about how to grow the intersections between them
- the verbal skills to help clients understand what we’re building for them
- a powerful intellectual curiosity
- a strong sense of craftsmanship
- a year or three working a crap job in the restaurant industry
This is a contract-to-permanent position beginning as soon as we find the right person.
